I left the Calhoun County Women’s Summit with a full heart—and complete confidence that something powerful is growing right here in our county.
On March 25, more than 100 women from across Calhoun County gathered in Lake City for the very first Calhoun County Women’s Summit. What began as an idea—one rooted in connection, leadership, and opportunity—came to life in a way that exceeded every expectation I had. I was so proud to see representation from nearly every community in our county, as well as guests from the surrounding area.
This event was never meant to be just another meeting or program. It was designed to create space. Space for women to step away from their daily responsibilities, to listen, to share, to connect, to reflect—and maybe even to see themselves differently.
And that’s exactly what happened.
From the moment women began arriving, there was an energy in the room that was undeniable. Conversations started immediately. Women who had never met before were connecting like old friends. Old friends were connecting with new friends. There was laughter, there was honesty, and there was a shared understanding that each of us plays a role in shaping the future of our communities.
This summit was made possible through an incredible partnership between Calhoun County Economic Development, Mid Iowa Insurance, and Stewart Memorial Hospital and Clinics. These organizations didn’t just sponsor an event—they invested in people. They invested in the idea that when women are supported, encouraged, and connected, entire communities benefit.
One of the most meaningful highlights of the evening was welcoming Lt. Governor Chris Cournoyer as a panelist. Having Lt. Governor Cournoyer join us was truly a blessing and a treat. She brought a unique statewide perspective to the conversation while also taking time to recognize and praise the work happening right here in Calhoun County and across Iowa. Her encouragement reinforced something we all felt—we are not just participating in Iowa’s growth, we are helping lead it.
Another powerful part of the evening was hearing from women right here in Calhoun County—leaders in agriculture, business, healthcare, finance, insurance, and family life. Their stories were real. Their paths were not always easy or predictable. But each one reflected something important: leadership doesn’t require permission. It begins in the moment when someone decides to step forward and say, “Maybe I should be the one.”
A wonderful group of leaders - Lt. Governor Chris Cournoyer, Krista Albright, Linn Block, Glenda Gentry, Kaylynn Henkenius, Jamie Ridgely and Linda Schmitt - providing advice and sharing stories: Never underestimate the power of your voice, trust your instinct, don't wait until you're "ready," servant leadership, ask questions, and get your own stuff (financially.) Courage is contagious!
My biggest take-away: Your small business is only as good as your community - you better get involved!
"And who knows but that you have come to your position for such a time as this?" Esther 4:14
Our keynote speaker, Stacy Besch, brought that message home in a truly memorable way. She encouraged every woman in the room to “bloom where you are planted,” a message made even more meaningful as each attendee left with a packet of seeds in hand. Stacy shared her journey in business, entrepreneurship, and advocacy with honesty, laughter, and heartfelt encouragement. Her story reminded us that growth doesn’t always happen in perfect conditions—but with faith, persistence, and courage, it happens anyway.
The atmosphere of the evening was just as impactful as the message itself. Local businesswomen helped bring the space to life with thoughtful and creative touches. Beautiful floral décor from Parkside Flowers, along with the artistry of Hannah Taylor, created a warm and welcoming environment. Nicholle Winter added her own creative touch with a stunning charcuterie display that quickly became a centerpiece of connection and conversation. All of it came together inside the Lake City Community Memorial Building, which served as the perfect backdrop for a cheery, feminine, and inviting atmosphere.
Behind the scenes, this event came together through the dedication and collaboration of an incredible planning team. The professionals of DPI of Rockwell City, alongside the talented women of Mid Iowa Insurance, worked tirelessly to help me ensure every detail reflected the purpose and spirit of the evening.
As I looked around that night, I didn’t just see attendees. I saw business owners, caregivers, volunteers, mentors, and future leaders. I saw women at every stage of life—some just beginning to ask what’s next, and others carrying decades of wisdom. And I saw something else too: possibility.
This summit is just the beginning.
If there is one thing I hope every woman took with her that night, it’s this: you don’t have to have everything figured out to make an impact. You just have to be willing to take the next step.
Because in Calhoun County, SHE grows here.
And after a night like that, I can say with certainty—we are just getting started and I have a fun idea for the next gathering of empowering women!
